Market Day Preparation

In collaboration with GrowNYC we order fruits, vegetables, beans, and grains every week for the purposes of resale on Saturdays. Children help us prepare the market, making signs, helping write prices, drawing pictures of the foods and learning about the way different fruits and vegetables are grown. At times we will include recipes and cooking into our class. Giving children an authentic reason to use language helps develop writing and reading skills and early math skills. Children can enter into this venture at their level. For example, older children might be able to help tally up totals while younger children will be able to enter at the level of drawing pictures or making signage. 

After-care is also available. The market portion of this class will last for one hour, and children are invited to participate in a variety of hands-on activities like drawing, legos, pattern blocks or games after the market portion is over. 

Children are encouraged but not required to attend the market on Saturday, and are invited to sell to their parents or guardians at pick up, although not required as well.
