Young readers are helped with phonics, fluency, phonemic awareness, sound blending, invented spelling and more. This small class format helps students whose particular gaps may be missed in a larger classroom. Teachers look for individual areas of strength and areas where more growth is needed and tailor the topics of the class to address these areas. Children's interests are cultivated and used as a resource to generate effective learning activities, like puppet shows, notes to distribute, comic books and more. Teachers work in collaboration with students to cultivate a love of reading, a love of storytelling and a love of words and language through exposure to rich literature, including poetry, children's books and playful games with language.
